Preseason No. 1 basketball teams Mater Dei of Santa Ana (boys) and Lynwood (girls) tripped to Texas for their first tests of the 2002-03 basketball season and both passed with flying colors.

The Lone Star Invitational of San Antonio is hoping to become one of the nation's best basketball events and organizers are off to a strong start. Mater Dei's boys and Lynwood's girls joined a field of 32 boys and 32 girls teams that was mostly from Texas but also included a few elite teams from outside the Southwest as well.

In the boys championship game, the Monarchs faced Riverdale Baptist of Marlboro, Md., which also is nationally-ranked, and won by 63-53. Local newspaper reports in San Antonio praised the play of Monarchs' forward D.J. Strawberry.

In the girls championship game, Lynwood lived up to its unanimous No. 1 national ranking with an easy 69-46 win over Duncanville, Texas. Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood earned the most headlines for the Knights. She had 28 points in one of the games.

Narbonne's girls also made the trip to San Antonio but was not nearly as successful. After dropping a nail-biter by one point to Lincoln of Dallas, the Gauchos were beaten in a consolation game, 61-30, by Bishop McNamara of Forestville, Md.
