State Athletes of the Week
Boys: J.C. Lewis
(Las Lomas, Walnut Creek)
Lewis doesn't have the size that college recruiters covet at the quarterback position so he tends to get overlooked by others in the East Bay such as Kyle Wright (Monte Vista), Sam Keller (San Ramon Valley) and Dennis Dixon (San Leandro). But on the prep level Lewis has had a strong career in his own right and last Friday night he had a memorable outing to lead Las Lomas past Acalanes of Lafayette, 32-21, in the CIF North Coast Section Class 2A East Bay title game. Lewis completed 11 of 21 passes for 198 yards and two TDs and also was effective running it with 19 carries for 142 yards and two more scores. A 41-yard touchdown pass by Lewis to James Yamashita gave Las Lomas an 18-14 lead in the third quarter. He next scored on a 40-yard run for a 25-21 lead early in the fourth quarter and finished up with a nine-yard run to seal the win for the Knights. Lewis passed for more than 2,000 yards last year as a junior and did it again this year as a senior.
Girls: Claretha Davis
Davis could be one of the top junior girls basketball players in the state. Last weekend, she showed wny in leading her Div. IV team past three Div. II squads for the championship of the Redwood Invitational in Visalia. Davis' three games in that tourney were 34 points and 13 rebounds in a 52-28 win over Golden West, 33 points and seven rebounds in a 59-55 win over Mt. Whitney and 41 points in a 62-48 victory over Redwood.
