Bethley Making His Own Name

It helps to be at the same high school as elite prospect George Uko. College coaches came by Chino (Calif.) Don Lugo High to see Uko, but took notice of 5-11, 202-pounder Steven Bethley. The safety prospect now has scholarship offers and wants more...

Chino (Calif.) Don Lugo is more than just George Uko this year.

In fact, Uko's best friend, Steven Bethley (5-11, 202), is another Don Lugo prospect who's becoming quite the recruit himself.

Bethley already boasts a pair of Mountain West scholarship offers and several more programs are keeping tabs on him.

"San Diego State was my first offer and my coach just told me that Colorado State has offered too," said Bethley.

In addition, Bethley is hearing from Oregon, Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, New Mexico State and Colorado, as well as the two Los Angeles schools.

"Most of the coaches have said to me that they want my film after the first three games," said Bethley.

The two hometown programs have been pretty clear with him on their time frame.

"I like USC and UCLA a lot and I've talked with them a lot too," said Bethley. "I know that UCLA told me that they will be doing an early evaluation and I talk with Coach Reggie Moore. USC said the same thing and it's Brennan Carroll who I'm being recruited by."

Bethley took an unofficial visit to Oregon with Uko, participated in the Ducks 1-Day Camp and said he's getting much interest from the Ducks.

He also camped at USC's Rising Stars Camp, UCLA's 1-Day Camp, the Nike Camp, the Los Angeles Combine and the Badger/Scout 7on7. So he's been diligently camping to get his own name out there.

"Most schools are looking at me as a safety but some are looking at me as an outside linebacker," said Bethley. "I prefer to play strong safety."

Bethley said the exposure that Uko has brought to Don Lugo has made it easier for him to be seen by college coaches. "I think more schools are coming to look at George then see me so that helps a lot," said Bethley. "I know schools will be coming to watch us play this year too."

Bethley said he wants to take some of his official visits, but not sure he'll take all five. "I'll probably just take a few of them, just to the schools I'm really interested in," said Bethley.

Bethley started both ways for Don Lugo and had a fine junior season. He rushed for 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns and led the league with 96 tackles and five interceptions. He was a First Team All-League pick on defense and All-Valley Third Team. As a sophomore, he was Second Team All-League on defense.

Academically, he has a 3.0 GPA and has already been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
