California 2010 Preseason Rankings: LBs

Los Angeles Crenshaw's Hayes Pullard and Fontana Kaiser's Josh Shirley lead the list of the West's top linebackers in the class of 2010..

Pullard, Whiteside, Stout and Wilkerson lead a strong group of middle linebackers from the Golden State while Shirley and Fua stand out on the outside.

1. Hayes Pullard, Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw
A phenomenal athlete, several schools want him as a running back, but his future is as a hitting machine on defense.

2. Cecil Whiteside, Newport Beach (Calif.) Newport Harbor- California
Another two-way threat, who also happens to be an elite discus thrower.  Cal will find a place real quickly to put Whiteside in action.

3. Zac Stout, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian- BYU
The anchor of a very good Lions defense, he gets to go up against one of the best offenses in the West each day.

4. Dave Wilkerson, Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista- California
A powerful middle backer who moves well sideline to sideline and will come up and hit you if you run on him.

5. Jordan Zumwalt, Huntington Beach (Calif.) Edison- Stanford
A good-sized linebacker at 6-4, who's also a beast on special teams.

6. Victor Burnett, Culver City (Calif.)
A tackling machine who excels in pass coverage as well as against the run.

7. Soma Vainuku, Eureka (Calif.)
Good athlete for his size, several schools like him as a fullback.

8. Eric Kendricks, Fresno (Calif.) Hoover
Central California's top linebacker is very similar to his brother Mychal, who's now at Cal.

9. Garrett Gilliland, Orange (Calif.) Lutheran
Arizona's top prospect at middle linebacker hits with pop and gets downfield in a hurry.

10. Keith Smith, Covina (Calif.) Charter Oak
Central California's top linebacker is very similar to his brother Mychal, who's now at Cal.

Outside Linebackers

1. Josh Shirley, Fontana (Calif.) Kaiser
An animal off the edge as a defensive end, he projects as a pass-rushing, hybrid linebacker in college.

2. Alani Fua, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian- BYU
Another player overshadowed by stars on a loaded team, Fua's got a nice long frame with plenty of room to add weight, but is already a bigtime player.

3. Brent Williams, Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft- Washington
An excellent pass rusher as a defensive end, he projects to outside linebacker, where his quickness and nose for the quarterback will come in handy.

4. Collin Keoshian, Santa Clarita (Calif.) Christian- BYU
A star in 8-man football, Keoshian would be just as valuable a player in 11-man and he's an excellent two-way prospect.

5. Ofa Fifita, San Bernardino (Calif.) Arroyo Valley
Size is the only thing holding Fifita back because he's one of the better linebackers in SoCal.
