Among those we've singled out this week for notable individual performances are a boy named Quesada, a girl named Quintana and a softball shortstop who rapped out 17 hits in one tournament.

Aaron Afflalo (Centennial, Compton): Blazed to 37 pts as Centennial got by La Canada 74-71 in a Southern Section Div III-A quarter-final overtime game.

Chris Agnes (St. Augustine, San Diego): In a high-scoring 85-81 win for the Saints in the San Diego Section Div. III playoffs over Central of El Centro, Agnes netted a game-high 37 pts.

Aja Ajanwachuku (Hesperia Christian): Tallied 33 pts but Rolling Hills Prep of Palos Verdes Estates was too much for the Patriots and prevailed 91-74 in a Southern Section Div V-AA quarter-final.

Curtis Allen (Rolling Hills Prep): In the same game mentioned above, Allen, one of the top juniors in Southern California, shined with a triple-double of 20 pts, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Chuma Awaji (Murphy, Los Angeles): Lit it up for 43 pts, including making all 21 of his free throws, while leading Murphy to a 70-61 upset over Lutheran of Orange in a Southern Section Div IV-AA quarter-final playoff game. The state record for making all free throws in a game by one player is 26.

David Avis (North, Bakersfield):Tried harder and wound up with 30 pts in leading the Stars past Lemoore, 73-60, in the Central Section Div. II playoffs.

Dominique Ball (Valley Christian, Roseville): Had a ball while scoring 35 pts in a 57-55 Sac-Joaquin Section Div V first round playoff victory over Sacramento Country Day. Early in the season, he had a previously unreported 40-pt game.

Brad Daugherty (Julian): This junior was one of the state's top eight-man football players last fall. He had his best basketball game last week with 34 pts as Julian defeated Calvin Christian of Escondido, 86-73, in a San Diego Section Div. V playoff game.

Mike Hornbuckle (Oaks Christian, Westlake Village): Blew for 39 pts including six threes as St Joseph of Santa Maria buckled to Oaks Christian 78-70 in a Southern Section Div IV-AA semi-final.

Kevin Houston (San Gorgonio, San Bernardino): Put down 32 pts but San G fell to Inglewood 70-64 in a Southern Section II-AA quarter-final upset. He also had 20 in his previous playoff game, a 69-41 win over Katella of Anaheim.

Amir Johnson (Verbum Dei, Los Angeles): Supreme post player led the way with 35 pts and 10 rebounds in an easy Southern Section Div IV-A quarterfinal 92-54 win over Cate of Carpinteria.

Lorenzo Keeler (Escondido): Keeler was feelin' it during his team's San Diego Section Div. II playoff game vs. Grossmont of La Mesa and wound up with a school-record 46 points. Since Lorenzo will be back next season, that's one school record that may not last long.

Antonio Kellogg (McClymonds, Oakland): Led the way with 32 pts as Mack continued its late-season charge with a 83-72 triunph over Skyline of Oakland.

Henry Meier (Sacramento Waldorf, Fair Oaks): Netted 32 pts as his team downed New Life Christian of Yuba City 73-42 in a Sac-Joaquin Section Div V playoff game. He averaged 20 PPG for the regular season.

Brett Milke (Coronado): Got Milke? No one did that much on defense for La Jolla Country in a San Diego Section Div. IV playoff game as Milke creamed the Torreys for 36 pts.

Evan Moore (Brea-Olinda, Brea): Pumped in 32 pts and had eight rebounds in Brea's 68-40 win over San Marcos of Santa Barbara in the CIFSS Div. II-A playoffs. The Wildcats appeared to be closing the season on a strong note after their recent struggles in the Century League.

DeMarcus Nelson (Vallejo): Led Vallejo past Beyer of Modesto with 31 pts and eight rebounds in a 86-48 Sac-Joaquin Section Div I first round playoff game.

Jesse Quesada (Los Banos): Poured in 37 pts in a Sac-Joaquin Section Div II first round playoff loss to Grant of Sacramento in overtime, 74-64. The announcer at Grant obviously likes mexican food as he first referred to Quesada as "Quesadilla."

Patrick Thornton (Florin, Sacramento): Dropped in 32 pts as the Panthers fell to the Div II state ranked Sacramento Dragons 87-72.

Angelo Tsagarakas (Casa Grande, Petaluma): Heated up for 41 pts, including nine threes, as Casa Grande tied up Windsor 87-66 in the Sonoma County League playoff final. He also scored 25 in a semi-final 63-52 victory over El Molino of Forestville.

Wesley Washington (Mater Dei, Santa Ana): Led the way with 33 pts in a 92-48 Southern Section Div II-AA second round rout of Hacienda Heights Wilson.

Wendell White (Redondo, Redondo Beach): Rose to the occasion with 35 pts and nine rebounds as Redondo defeated Dominguez of Compton 74-64 in a Southern Section Div II-A quarter-final playoff game.

Dwain Williams (Chaparral, Temecula): Strong candidate for State Sophomore Player of the Year made all 14 of his free throws while scoring 35 pts in leading the Pumas to a 75-72 victory over Camarillo in a Southern Section Div I-A second round playoff game. That extended his free-throw streak to 36 made consecutively.

David Young (Sacramento): Popped for 33 pts and pulled down 15 rebounds in leading the Dragons past Florin of Sacramento in a Sac-Joaquin Section Div II first round playoff game. In the second round, he had 26 pts and 14 rebounds as Grant of Sacremento went down 87-46.


Imani Dhahabu (Salesian, Richmond): The University of Miami bound center led Salesian to an upset 50-41 triumph over Kennedy of Richmond with 31 pts. It was a Bay Shore Athletic League quarter-final playoff game.

Shannee Green (Cajon, San Bernardino): Had 31 pts in a Southern Section Div I-A second round 71-41 playoff rout over Jurupa Valley of Mira Loma.

Jenn Hall (Folsom): Scored 30 pts while leading Folsom past Wood of Vacaville 60-53 in a Sac-Joaquin Section Div II second round playoff game.

Charde Houston (San Diego): The big-time junior rang up her third 50-pt game of the season and her seventh above 40 with 53 in the Cavers' 107-37 playoff win over Calexico. Houston also had 39 pts in a 103-52 playoff romp over La Costa Canyon.

Erin Myrick (Bishop Amat, La Puente): Scored 30 pts and pulled down 13 rebounds as Bishop Amat got by Chaminade of West Hills 60-54 in a key Southern Section Div III-A semifinal playoff game.

Ashley Paris (Piedmont): Hit for 30 pts and grabbed 13 rebounds as Piedmont downed Salesian of Richmond 72-59 in a Bay Shore Athletic League semifinal playoff game.

Lindsey Pluimer (San Clemente): Got 30 pts, had eight rebounds and blocked eight shots as San Clemente defeated Temescal Canyon of Lake Elsinore 67-39 in a Southern Section Div I-A second round playoff game.

Kelli Pon (Orestimba, Newman): Junior guard has been one of the top scorers in the southern part of the Sac-Joaquin Section all season and netted 31 pts as her team downed Bret Harte of Altaville, 63-61, in the Div. IV playoffs.

Jezzal Quintana (Sanger): Led her team to an 81-67 victory over Edison of Fresno in the Central Section Div. II playoffs with 31 pts. Jezzal averaged nearly 20 ppg during the regular season.

Brooke Stanley (Caruthers): Scored almost half her teams pts with 30 as Caruthers whipped Orosi, 54-30, in the Central Section Div. IV playoffs. Stanley steamed for a 23.2 scoring average for the regular season.

Ashley Walker (Grace Davis, Modesto): One of the top sophomores in Northern California, Walker poured in 34 pts and grabbed 19 rebounds but it wasn't enough in a 63-52 Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I playoff loss to Fairfield.


Caleb Grant (Valley Christian, Roseville): Blasted two homers and finished with six RBI in a 11-8 victory over Golden Sierra of Garden Valley.

Mike Rodriguez (Argonaut, Jackson): Tossed a no-hitter and drove in a run with a triple as the Mustangs recorded a 4-0 win at home over Forest Lake Christian of Auburn.

Nick St. Hiliare (East Union, Manteca): Crushed a pair of homers, added a triple and rang up seven RBI as the Lancers blanked Edison of Stockton, 13-0.


Haley Perkins (Clovis West, Fresno): Sophomore shortstop hit .708, going 17-for-24, in seven games of the Mt. Whitney tournament in Visalia. Perkins had two triples, three homers, scored nine times, had six RBI and stole six bases in six attempts. Clovis West is the defending Central Section Yosemite Division Large champion.

Kacey Uhlman (Center, Antelope): Batted 5x5 with two doubles and two RBI as Center downed San Juan of Citrus Heights in a five-inning 23-0 "run-around."
