Player to Watch: Christian Backes

2013 Grandview Tight End Christian Backes of Aurora, Colorado looks to continue tight end tradition.

Over the past two seasons Grandview tight end Evan Bayliss established himself as one of the top players west of the Mississippi. The strength of Bayliss' game garnered him multiple BCS offers before he eventually opted to play for the University of Oregon. Although Bayliss, a two time All-State player, will be missed by his Grandview squad, the return of 2013 tight end Christian Backes will help soften the blow.

Backes, who does it all for his Grandview squad, having at one time or another played tight end, quarterback, longsnapper, holder and linebacker, looks to have the skills to replace Bayliss nicely in the Wolves' offense. Backes, who is currently 6-5 and weighs 220 pounds, self reports a 4.74 forty yard dash and a 31 inch vertical jump.

In his limited opportunities to catch the ball last season Backes showed himself to be an adept pass catcher, who can line up in multiple spots and make plays when necessary. A quick review of Backes film shows a player that is a hands catcher, who creates matchup problems due to his height and length. A very thin 220 pounds, Backes is hitting the weights hard and has already added good size since this past season. Although not overly physical Backes is a willing blocker and should improve in this area as he gains size and gets reps.

Traditionally Grandview likes to throw to the tight end, Backes should benefit from this and post good numbers. If he does post good numbers and with his DI size, Backes could see offers come his way next season.
