Scout’s Take

The Bear Creek versus Lakewood thriller Thursday night highlighted multiple mid-major talents.

On Thursday Bear Creek and Lakewood played a great Overtime game that saw the Bears win 34-33.  Key to the win was the diverse play of Colorado State verbal Olabisi Johnson.  Johnson, on defense, recovered a fumble and had two interceptions.  For good measure Johnson caught the game winning OT touchdown pass.  Rams fans and especially HC Mike McElwain have to be excited about Johnson’s versatile play.  Johnson, the fastest on field player I have seen this season in Colorado, stands a long 6-1 and weighs 180. “Bisi” brings great value to Colorado State as he can be receiver, returner and even potentially corner at the next level.

Lakewood’s Mao Niko is a beast!  At 6-3 225 he has great size and an aggressive physical presence making him known on both sides of the ball.  He added to his touchdown reception collection Thursday night.  Niko is one of the best defenders I have seen this year.  Niko gets after the passer from a variety of positions and gets pressure from a two point stance.  Niko has a motor, gets to plays from sideline to sideline and most impressively finishes when he gets to the ball.  In the Lakewood defense Niko pins his ears back and goes, but he is disciplined and maintains the edge, strings plays and allows help to come.  The piece I’m looking for is coverage, but I’m sure due to his athleticism he will do well.  Niko has a Montana offer but mid-majors need to get on board.

Mid-major recruit Tony Bello of Bear Creek played well Thursday night at tackle and looked especially good in pass protection.
