To say Mao Niko is having strong season would be an understatement. After a four game losing streak, two of the games losing by one point, Lakewood is on a three game win streak including a 21-7 Thursday night win against Columbine. For his part Niko has 82 tackles, an interception, two sacks and numerous quarterback hurries.
At 6-2 225 pounds, Niko has good size, strength and great quickness. His skill set has not gone unnoticed from colleges and he has an ever growing offer sheet. Niko’s most recent offer comes from UC Davis, this on top of previous offers from Montana and Northern Colorado.
Niko’s offer sheet currently is filled by FCS programs but higher level programs are starting to take a look. Niko reports he is hearing from Wyoming and New Mexico State. Niko also says he is hearing from the University of Colorado.
As Colorado high school playoffs approach Niko should see his offer sheet grow. His game moves nicely to the next level. A very versatile athlete, Niko could be an every down player. He rushes off the edge very well from a two point stance, is athletic enough to cover and is strong enough to set the edge and play the run. Niko will be able to make contributions in a 4-3 and 3-4 front, working as an outside linebacker. Niko could also move to inside backer if necessary. Further, his ability to run and make tackles in space makes him a great candidate for special teams.
