Cumber Excited for Season

2017 defensive back Christian Cumber key to 2015 Mullen defense.

Few programs in the state of Colorado are more excited for the upcoming 2015 football season than Mullen.  The Mustangs boast a group of young playmakers that offensively put up over 30 points a game last season.  Key to the offensive production is quarterback Jovan Tafoya and running back Marcus McElroy.  Tafoya threw for over 1,500 yards and rushed for 400 plus on the way to 27 scores.  McElroy, one of the top recruits in the Colorado class of 2017, rushed for 913 yards and averaged 20 yards per reception last season.  This duo, especially in Head Coach Tom Thenell’s offense, will have monster seasons.

Defensively, Mullen will need to tighten up as the Mustangs allowed over 34 points game.  Key to this is the talented defensive backfield highlighted by 2017 products Isiahia Banks and Christian Cumber. Cumber, a 6-0 180 pounder, had over 100 tackles to go with eight passes defended and two interceptions.  Also, Cumber is a special teams’ standout having blocked two kicks and working as a dangerous kick returner.  Defensively Cumber is a smooth and smart operator that has good feet and better instincts, comfortable lining up over slots or as a safety.  Also, Cumber is a great tackler in open space.  These attributes have gained the junior to be in state offers from Colorado and Colorado State.  Cumber’s time covering slots, ability to tackle and line up in multiple spots make him a very good option as a nickel at the next level.  Further, his comfort and ability in multiple special teams’ roles may allow him to find the field early is his college career.

Beyond the in state offers Cumber is reporting interest from UCLA and Nebraska.  Cumber will camp with both the Bruins and Huskers with the hope of gaining offers.  Another camp Cumber is excited about is the All-Poly which he will attend in Utah.  Cumber will also hit team camp later this month at Colorado State.

For his part Cumber is focused on next season stating about his Mullen squad, Things are going great! We are coming together nicely. We are all really excited for the upcoming season. With players like Cumber people should be excited not only about Mullen football but for the players they will get to see this fall.
