Top players such as Santino Marchiol, Dylan McCaffrey and Marcus McElroy highlight a wild weekend of Colorado football

This weekend highlights a wide open 5A race in Colorado high school football.

The 2015 season is shaping up as one of the most interesting in recent years for Colorado 5A football.  Once a team looks to make a move, another knocks them down.

Last night, the big shocker came as Mullen, defeated Pomona 38-31.  Prior to the game, Pomona looked solid in the division knocking off Valor in the season opener and losing by one to defending 5A champ Cherry Creek.  In an exciting 38-31 OT game, 2017 Mullen RB Marcus McElroy had a 98 yard kickoff return and 120 receiving yards to go with two scores.  Sophomore receiver A’Jon got the winning score pushing the Mustangs to 2-1.

In a tight game, with a surprising finish, Horizon, playing solid defense, defeated Fairview 18-14.  Key to the win was the work of running back Cade Verkler who rushed for 189 yards on 35 carries, moving the chains and keeping the Fairview offense off the field.

Continuing the theme of close games Regis held off Cherokee Trail 19-14.  Regis jumped out to a 13-0 lead and hung on for the remainder of the game.  It has not been pretty as the Raiders have struggled to score points this season but they are now 2-0 as they move into a series of games they should win.  Cherokee Trail is also 2-1 with a meeting next with Rangeview.

Arapahoe picked up one of their biggest wins in recent years holding off Grandview 17-14.  With the big win Head Coach Mike Campbell has his Warriors at 3-0.  Looking at the schedule, Arapahoe, if they stay focused, has a series of winnable games.  Grandview needs a rebound as they next play ThunderRidge.

Two of Colorado’s best hit the road to play two of Utah’s best.  Last night, Valor Christian got back on track after a very uncharacteristic two game losing streak, defeating Salt Lake East 26-10.  In the win Dylan McCaffrey had a very solid night throwing for 234 yards and two scores with no interceptions.  Senior WR Ben Waters had his best game of the season with six catches for 106 yards and a score.

Cherry Creek 3-0, today faces Jordan Utah.  Jordan is 4-0 coming off a dominating win last week. This game has the earmarks of a great matchup.  Cherry Creek, boasting a very talented defense with multiple DI recruits, including Santino Marchiol, will attempt to slow Jordan’s high speed offense.  Jordan senior quarterback Drew Lisk has already compiled nearly 1,700 yards of offense to go with 14 scores.  Today could be a great game!
