Phenoms Week 7

Coach Scott Yates of Kent Denver picks up victory #300.

The ultimate Phenom this week is Kent Denver Head Coach Scott Yates. This week’s victory, for the 7-0 Sun Devils over Faith Christian, is Coach Yates 300th career victory.  Each win is an accomplishment, getting young men to band together each week for a common goal win or lose is an accomplishment.  To do it at such a high level over a 30 year period is amazing! Congrats Coach!

2017 Mullen running back Marcus McElroy had his best statistical game of the season rushing for 225 yards and four scores as his Mustangs won over Lakewood.

The Columbine Rebels needed every one of Mikey Griebel’s big plays to hold off the always tough Pomona Panthers 42-35.  In the win for the unbeaten Rebels, Griebel ran for three scores, caught a TD pass, forced a fumble and had a late interception.  On the night Griebel rushed for over 220 yards.  For Pomona, running back Cameron Gonzales scored three time.

Denver East quarterback Deron Harrell had another big game throwing for three scores and rushing for two more in a win over Thornton.

It is great to see Aurora Central having a strong 7-0 season.  Key is the strong rushing attack spearheaded by Taevon Jordan and Fransicos Aranda.  Aranda, a junior, went big this weekend rushing for over 260 yards in a W over George Washington.

The score 28-20, as Grandview defeated #1 Cherry Creek was not indicative of how Grandview dominated the defending champion Bruins.  Key to the Wolves’ dominance was senior linebacker Deandre Shorts.  Shorts, spent the entire evening in the Creek backfield, sacking, hitting and harassing Bruin QB Joe Caplis.  Also, the Grandview offensive line was very strong working against the Creek front creating holes for junior running back Hayden Blubaugh, who rushed for nearly 200 yards against a talented Bruin D.  Blubaugh, over the past three weeks has rushed for over 800 yards and scored eight times.

In an offensive explosion Roosevelt put up one more point defeating Holy Family 64-63.  Roosevelt running back Cameron Hurtado rushed for over 230 yards and scored four times.  Holy Family QB Chris Helbig scored seven times, throwing four TD passes, rushing for two and catching a touchdown.

Over the past three weeks, Discovery Canyon has found its offense scoring over forty points in three straight wins key to this has been the play of senior quarterback Matt Call and his rush game.
