Elijah Leyva of Pomona preps to defend against Dylan McCaffrey's Valor squad.

Colleges Take Notice of State’s Best

Right now a young Pomona squad is prepping for the 5A state title game against Valor Christian.  Earlier in the season, Pomona, in a hard fought win, defeated Valor 28 to 14. Although young in many spots, Pomona boasts one of Colorado most experienced and productive defenders in senior DE/OLB Elijah Leyva.  Leyva’s high motor and physical play has not only helped his Panthers but also garnered the 230 pounder college interest.  CSU-Pueblo really likes Leyva’s game.  Also taking a look at Leyva are Utah State, North Dakota and recently Colorado State has shown interest.

Yesterday two of the state’s best, JoJo Domann of Pine Creek and Jon Van Diest of Cherry Creek were injured.  2017 Creek OLB/DE Van Diest broke his arm early in a tough semi loss against Valor Christian.  Domann, leader of defending 4A champ Pine Creek separated his shoulder in the first quarter of an upset loss to Loveland.

Great to see former Grandview safety Cameron Knight pick up an offer from Northern Colorado.  The 2015 Grandview safety is playing this year at Los Angeles Valley Community College.  Now with the UNC offer look for Knight, a smart, hard hitting safety to pick up more interest.

Recently watched film of 2017 Rock Canyon receiver Eric Hommel.  The 6-2 wideout had 11 TD catches this season.  Hommel is one of the best hand catchers in Colorado.  Although not a speedster, Hommel runs good patterns and can catch in traffic.  Hommel is player to keep an eye on for next season.

2016 Niwot athlete Blake Montgomery is currently gaining some college looks.  Recently Montgomery made a visit to the University of Montana.  The 6-3 230 pound Montgomery is a versatile athlete and reports colleges are looking at him as a tight end or defensive end.

2017 tackling machine Donovaughn Baucom of Denver Thomas Jefferson High School recently made a visit to the University of Wyoming to catch a game.  This season the 205 pound Baucom was all over the field registering 141 total tackles.  7.5 of his tackles were for losses and he blocked multiple kicks this past season.
