2017 Pomona running back Cameron Gonzales is a finisher. The 5’8 180 pound back does not have the type of measurables that DI always look for, but that does not matter, when it is time to get the job done Gonzales is the guy you want to have the ball. This past season, as Pomona made its run to the state title game, Gonzales was a workhorse for Pomona. On offense, Gonzales rushed for nearly 1,500 yards while scoring 29 times. On defense Gonzales had 51 tackles and two interceptions from his outside backer position.
Watching Gonzales, most impressive are his yards after contact. Built low to the ground, Gonzales breaks arm tackles and always gets initial yards. This attribute is especially important in the redzone, where Gonzales is effective as evidenced by his 29 rushing scores. Also, Gonzales running style is one cut with the speed to make long runs as seen by his nearly seven yards per carry.
Gonzales, a three sport athlete, not only was part of Pomona’s football 5A runner up, but also part of Pomona’s state champ wrestling and track squads. Beyond the great work in sports, Gonzales is an outstanding student carrying a 4.33 GPA.
Gonzales’ combination of athletics and academics has garnered college attention with Wyoming, Northern Colorado showing interest. Gonzales recently camped at Black Hills State and because of his academics has notice from Harvard, Yale and the University of San Diego.
Gonzales says he is, “mainly focusing on my speed and agility this offseason that's a big key for me!” Looking at his team, which returns numerous key players, Gonzales says, “Our team looks great, we still have a lot of room to improve and we'll be working for that over the year. I think we have a great opportunity to be in the same position as last year and if that's the case hopefully we win it all.”
Gonzales is a hardworking, tough-minded, winner, attributes colleges need. The program that is smart enough to offer Gonzales will gain a player that will always be productive and make the team better.
