Mullen sits on the edge, over the last few seasons, a very talented squad of Mustangs has not broken through to make a long playoff run. This year could be the year as all the talent, with three to four years under their belts as starters pushes to make a move.
Of this group of talented seniors that includes Christian Cumber, Isiahia Banks, Jovan Tafoya and more, one of the cornerstones is 2017 running back Marcus McElroy. The long time starter has posted impressive numbers during his career, gaining multiple DI offers and establishing himself as one of Colorado’s best backs. McElroy is aware of Mullen’s position and the pressure to win for his talented team stating, “The hump we have to get over is the hump of just taking games one week at a time and staying confident in what we do.” Further, McElroy is well aware of what is key for Mullen this year, saying, “For us a strength will be our experience.”
Amongst the large group of returning talent, McElroy highlights senior Tanner Clem as a player to watch. Clem, who has not played since his freshman year, looks to help shore up the Mullen front 7 from his linebacker position.
McElroy and crew will find out early where they stand as they take on last year’s 5A runner up Pomona. The Panthers are always one of Colorado’s most physical teams and with a cadre of returning skill players including Cam Gonzales and Max Borghi, should create a great week 1 matchup.
For McElroy, who boasts a long and diverse list of offers, he hopes to make a decision regarding his college choice sometime this season.
