It has a been a exiting, up and down ride for Plant City's Bennie Coney, who bounced back from being removed from the Plant City Raiders last season. Over the spring and summer, Coney refocused himself and committed to working hard and becoming a leader. With his talents and a belief in his turnaround, Coney was listed as one of the state's top QB prospects for 2012.
During the recruiting process, Bennie was heavily recruited by most of the big name BCS schools, but it appears that that process has come to a close. SunStateFootball.com learned today that Coney committed to the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Coney had an original Top 4 back in February that included storied, powerhouse programs such as Notre Dame, Michigan, LSU, Florida State. Since that point, other school's like Arkansas, Cincinnati, South Florida, Louisville, and Virginia Tech jumped ahead in the race and schools like Notre Dame, LSU, and Michigan fell back or cooled off.
In early July, Coney updated a new Top 3 that included Virginia Tech, Louisville, and Cincy, with Arkansas and Pittsburgh rounding out the Top 5. All the schools had offenses that intrigued Coney and would help showcase his strong arm and mobility.
Just a few days ago, Coney narrowed down his choices to Virginia Tech and Cincinnati, eventually picking the Bearcats.
Plans for an official announcement are in the works. Check back with SunStateFootball.com for more information and quotes from Coney on his commitment.
