Charles Fishbein has been following the recruiting and drafting of football players for over a decade at the collegiate and high school level.
His insight into the game is unmatched. Each winter, he produces an NFL recruiting manual that traces every player heading into April's NFL Draft.
He shows how versatile he is when he transfers his knowledge to the high school game in the state of Florida the rest of the year.
Charles will be hosting his IN THE HUDDLE SEGMENT for FloridaKids.us throughout the summer and into the season, giving you a unique perspective of some of the top athletes in Florida. We hope that you will enjoy and make use of his perspective.
Player: Antwan Cox.
School: Miami Killian.
STRENGTHS: When it comes to technique there aren't many I have seen that are better than Cox. He is one of the top cover-corners you will see in the state of Florida this year.
When Cox lined up at this summer's Rutgers University Camp, he completely shut down every receiver he went up against. He did not let any of the receivers at the camp get any separation. Cox, a real "sleeper" in my eyes, gets great position on the receiver opposite him and stays in his hip pocket. For his size, he is also a solid open field tackler.
NEEDS TO WORK ON: There is little doubt that he needs to spend more time in the weightroom and bulk up his body to avoid injury. Cox need to get bigger and stronger if he is going to make an impact in college. His lack of size at only 150 pounds will cause problems against bigger and more physical receivers. He also needs to show whether or not he can face the best receivers on a weekly basis and get the job done. Another thing I observed while watching this talented young man is he lacks blazing speed and that may be a concern for some college recruiters.
OVERALL: When you look at Miami Killian High School, they have produced some of the best high school defensive backs the past many years. Talking with Larry Blustein, he said that he reminded him of when former University of Michigan standout Evan Cooper was at Killian and was considered a top-flight player. They also produces standouts such as Derrick Gibson, Miguel Scott and last year JR Bryant.
Cox is looking to be the next in a long line of big time D1 college football prospects. Along with his teammate Demetrius Morley, Killian should have two of the very best defensive backs in Miami-Dade County this year.
The bloodlines are there as Cox cousin Torrie Cox (Miami Northwestern) was a starter for the Pittsburgh Panthers and is now in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucs.
I will tell you this, here is a football player many didn't include in their list of top players in the state. All I say is those people need to pay a little more attention when watching him the next time!
