As we have throughout the summer, we bring you yet another SUMMER CAMP report from across the state of Florida. Today, we introduce you to the Bucks of Deerfield Beach, a true force among 6A schools.

Monday I headed out to take an early look at the Deerfield Beach Bucks. Most of the talk surrounding this team all off-season is how QB Marcus Allen will replace the best player in school history, Brent Schaeffer. Allen actually has a better arm than Schaeffer and is just as accurate, although he lacks the athleticism. He showed some flashes today, including a beautiful long TD pass to junior WR Brandon Bell in the full contact scrimmage. Allen did struggle some though, particularly any time that he was under pressure. Because they do have an inexperienced QB, a much bigger focus for the Deerfield offense this year will be on the running game, led by senior FB/RB Roderick Ferguson. Although only about 5-7, Roderick is as tough a RB as you will find. He never gets taken down by the first tackler and has the speed to take it to the house. He also showed excellent hands. Sophomore Brent Smith is another kid to look out for. He's very tiny, but has superb moves. He'll be a major part of the offense as both a RB and a slot receiver. Two of the best sophomore receivers in the state last year are back in Jerel Stewart and the aforementioned Brandon Bell. They combined for over 70 catches, 1200 yards, and 15 TD's last season so you know they can get the job done. The offensive line at this point looks to be the weakness of the offense. They struggled quite a bit today, but that also can be contributed to Deerfield's excellent front 7.

That front 7 is as good as you are going to find in Broward County. The DL is more than solid all across the board, led by 6-4, 275 pound monster Mike Blanc. Now on to the most impressive part of this team, the LB's. I'm not exaggerating at all when I say this is probably the best unit the entire state. Senior MLB Wendy Napolean is the leader of this football team. He led the team in tackles last year and his 6-2 and 225 pound frame is very impressive. Oh yeah, he's also got a GPA of over 4.0. At SLB is big time playmaking senior Jarvis Hicks. He's already getting some major D-1 attention because of his ability to just flat out make big plays. He probably had the most impressive defensive play of the day when he came untouched off the corner and made the sack on the QB. At the weakside is junior Tim Smith who is probably the best overall backer on the team. He's dynamite in coverage and is seemingly always around the ball in run support. He stands about 5-11 and 200 pounds and is definitely a kid to keep an eye on next year. The position that really makes this Buck defense special however is at CB. Experienced senior talents Jamelle Howard and Shelton Penrow give the Bucks a great luxury. They allow the defense to load the line of scrimmage because they can be left on an island in man to man coverage with the opposing WR's.

Deerfield made it to the state semifinals for the 3rd time in the past 10 years, and for the 3rd time in 10 years they came up just short. The goals of this team should be set at least just as high this year, in large part because of the dominating defense. If the OL can raise there level of play by the start of the season, it will also give the Bucks a very dynamic and balanced offense.
