INSIDE THE HUDDLE: Joseph Myers

When Chris Myers arrived at the University of Miami five years ago, his objective was to work harder than anyone on the offensive line to become the best football player possible. Now, his brother, a senior tight end from Miami Palmetto, is looking to do much of the same this coming season.

During the summer and into the season, www.floridakids.us will bring you our IN THE HUDDLE segments with football players throughout the state of Florida.

These are similar to the evaluations we pass on to the hundreds of colleges who visit our website, call us on the phone and correspond via e-mail.

Here is another top football player to keep an eye on this season – and beyond.

When I ask for film during the spring, high school coaches have been tremendous in getting me just about anyone I needed to watch, often times as an enhancement.

When I received two tapes from Miami Palmetto during May, I started to review a few of the rising seniors who were on the list that was sent. As I watched one of the two games that the Panthers had against defending 6A state champion Miami Killian, I kept focusing in on the tight end. This kid did some very impressive things from the position.

As I checked off his number with the list that was sent, I noticed that the player I was watching, more than held his own against the talented team. When I read JOSEPH MYERS, I thought to myself that this was the athlete we had in at the Perfect Competition/FloridaKids.us Camp in March.

He also happened to be the younger brother of former Miami Hurricanes' lineman Chris Myers, who is now with the Denver Broncos.

While the Myers you see today, vying for a spot on an NFL roster, was not always the athlete you see today, his younger brother may leave high school with more potential and perhaps more promise, which has college coaches thinking – out loud!

STRENGTHS: While Chris Myers learned to play the offensive line from one of the best coaches (Art Kehoe) in the country, he would often come home and teach his brother some techniques on how to block. That‘s why the younger Myers is easily one of the best blocking tight ends in the state, and very few people have noticed.

"I am a hard worker, so judging my foot speed at a camp is not what I am all about," Myers said. "I combine good football speed with the ability to block."

In addition, he gets off the line of scrimmage very well and filters into the secondary, often with a linebacker struggling to keep up.

Myers is also playing wide receiver in addition to tight end, which has given a different a different perspective.

WHAT HE NEEDS TO WORK ON: Getting stronger is a priority. A new off season workout has really started to help, and every player on the team has noticed the results – in a hurry.

"I just need to get more consistent," Myers said. "Last year was my first year starting, so I learned a lot of things that I'm sure that will carry over to my final season."

OVERALL: While being related to someone who has made it to an NFL camp is no guarantee that the same will happen, in this case where you have a very good football player who is improving all the time, anything can happen.

Just watching Myers play this game is something that I enjoy. He is a quality athlete with a tremendous work ethic, positive attitude and good grades.

COLLEGES ON THE HORIZON: While Wisconsin has spoken with him about the opportunity to play, Myers is still not turning anyone away. He knows that if given the opportunity to play at a Miami, Michigan, Kansas State, Tennessee or Mississippi, he will more than keep his end of the bargain!
