Brandon takes control of First Place

A look at the weekly Florida High School Team rankings.

Brandon appears to have cemented its place as the number one team in Florida this year with two solid wins in tournaments out of state, first at the Heart of Dixie tourney in Alabama and next the Cheesehead in Wisconsin.

Last week, the Eagles left the warm confines of Tampa Bay and flew north to brave the frigid cold temps of Kaukauna , Wisconsin.

They won the team title with 686 points outdistancing two nationally ranked teams, Wausau West (656.5) and Montini , Illinois (586). That good result caused Amateur Wrestling News to move Brandon up to #12 in the nation from the #20 spot where they were ranked prior to the tourney.

Ryan Renkey (112), Rossi Bruno (119), Tyler Liberatore (125), Eric Grajales (135) and Joe Cozart (145) won gold medals. Grajales and Liberatore both advanced their season won-loss records this season to 41 wins and zero losses.

South Dade remained in second place as the Bucs won all eight of the meets at Palmetto Ridge in the Deisel Duals including a 55-8 mauling of the host Bears.

Kissimmee Osceola was solidly in third place winning their AJ Jones Memorial Duals. The Kowboys wrestled nearly their entire up a weight class and still managed to win the championship finals dual against Orlando Timber Creek by a score of 51-18.

Miami American won the battle, for now, of second place in Dade County as they defeated Miami Columbus 33-25.

Springstead won their invite.

Riverdale took the weekend off to host a kids tourney and to watch alumni Scotti Sentes pin down a Mountain Hawk to help his team win the team title at the Viriginia Duals.

Palmetto Ridge lost to Lake Gibson so some of the rankings voters are not reading enough of the results. The Bears did manage to win six meets.

Cardinal Gibbons took second behind Columbus in the Mazda tourney in Naples . Domingo Simmons (119), Paul Marcello (125) and Frank Pettineo Jr (145) won titles for the Redskins and enable them to place ahead of St Thomas and North Port.

Lake Gibson won seven out of eight at the Diesel Duals, losing only to South Dade.

Oviedo won the Tournament of Champions at Lake Mary . Placing behind them were Niceville, Orlando Phillips, Winter Springs, Orlando Edgewater, Lake Mary , Southwest Miami and St Cloud.

Manatee won their annual Coach Kelly Challenge Duals as they defeated Palm Bay 52-16 and Charlotte 52-19, in duals among the winners of the pool rounds.

Bloomingdale took 4th in the Kelly Duals as the Bulls lost to Charlotte 37-31.

Braddock took third in the Jones dual s as they only lost to host Osceola 48-24.

Pace took the weekend off. I think they were supposed to compete in a tourney in Naples but after the situation in their previous event in Naples , maybe they decided against it.

Dunedin won their first ever Pinellas County Athletic Conference (PCAC) team title. Jeremy Goodloe (125), John Cannizzaro (152), Antonio Talley (171) and Justin Zeedyk (189) won titles for Coach Marc (calthefall) Allison and his talented crew of assistant coaches - coach cripes, talon wrestling and pretty boy.

We couldn't find any results last week for Jensen Beach or Miami Palmetto. We know that Jensen Beach is scheduled to compete this weekend in Flagler against Clay, Fleming Island , Gainesville , Osceola, Palm Bay , Sarasota , Springstead, St Cloud , Tampa Bay Christian and Winner Springs and 20 something others.

Clay won their own Rotary tourney as they finished four points ahead of Orange Park Ridgeview. No love at all from our voters in the rankings poll for Ridgeview for this close finish.

Citrus took the weekend off as they hosted a USA Wrestling tourney for kids.

We couldn't find any results for Hialeah Miami Lakes or Gainesville High.

Palm Bay took second in the Kelly Duals as they defeated Tampa Riverview, Miami Sunset and Charlotte.
