George Gulesian is Top Wrestler- Week 7

George Gulesian, a senior at Christopher Columbus High, a private all-boys Catholic school in Miami , is the new Top Wrestler in the 130-pound class in Florida . Gulesian takes over the spot that has been passed back and forth between Matt Nereim of Winter Springs and Joe Locksmith of Osceola who are now in the middle of their best of five series that is expected to end on the mats in Lakeland .

Gulesian earned his votes by virtue of his victory in the GMAC tourney last weekend. In the Championship Finals, Gulesian faced off against Jonathan Olivera of Southwest Miami , the only wrestler to defeat Gulesian25-1, this season.

After six minutes of wrestling, the score was deadlocked at 5-5. Midway into the overtime period, Gulesian was able to get behind Olivera for a takedown that earned him the title.

"George has a lot of heart," said Jim Husk, Head Coach of Columbus . "He can go a good hard six minutes and then some. He is just as good in the third period as he is in the first period. George sometimes seems to get stronger in the third period."

Husk sees good things in the future for Gulesian. "He's got all the tools. He loves the competition. I'm proud of him. Look for him to go to college and to be a good college wrestler."

Rossi Bruno of Brandon takes back the Top Wrestler spot at 119. Gabe Chandler of Miami Braddock had taken over when he defeated Bruno by a 5-3 decision in the District 16 Duals. Last week, Chandler lost a tight 7-6 decision to Matthew Barrera of Miami Springs in the semifinals of the GMAC. Meanwhile, Bruno won championships in the Heart of Dixie tourney in Alabama and the Cheesehead tourney in Wisconsin to re-capture the berth on the All State team.

Another change is that Oxsunn Ramirez of Southwest Miami is now the Top Wrestler at 140. Ramirez, a senior, won the GMACs with an impressive win by an 8-1 decision in the finals against the defending state champion, Ray Parrado of Miami Goleman.

Ramirez replaces Kevin Timothy of Brandon who lost a decision to Carlos Montero of Bloomingdale in a dual meet last week at Brandon.

In other weights in the All State category, there were to be a lot of votes for Earl Hall at 103, Kyle Grueninger at 119, Clark Glass at 130 and Donovan Green of Timber Creek at 285.

Green stepped up when he won a title at the Flagler tourney. In the finals, he defeated Josh Wofford of Palm Bay by an 8-1 decision.

In the Class categories, a few changes,

112 - Kevin Norstrem of Tampa Bay Christian no longer shares the top spot with Michael Hess of Jensen Beach . In a highly anticipated final in the Flagler tourney between the two wrestlers tied for the number one ranking, Norstrem was out in the middle of the mat when Michael Hess reported to the table and announced that he was forfeiting due to a shoulder injury.

160 – James Bland of Avon Park takes over from teammate Kemosi Hatten as the two have switched weights.

171 – Julian Martinez of Miami Pace is alone at the top as Max Piasecki of Jensen Beach lost by pin to All State #1 Jacob Harmer and was injured and had to forfeit out and finished 6th.
