Wrestling Top Teams- Week 8

Brandon is definitely Florida's Top Team, Manatee gives chase Week 8

1 - Brandon left no doubt that they are definitely Florida 's Top Team as Coach Russ Cozart's Eagles won the 25th Annual Tony Ippolito Memorial tourney. Their streak of Ippolito wins is now at 17. Can anybody name the team that last won this event other than Brandon ? Bonus points if you can name the two individual champs that Brandon had in that event.

Winning individual titles for Brandon were Ryan Renkey (112), Rossi Bruno (119), Clark Glass (130), Eric Grajales (135), Kevin Timothy (140), Joe Cozart (145) and Wally Figaro (152). Grajales was also named the Outstanding Wrestler for Light Weights.

Coach Russ Cozart has some local business to take care of this weekend as the Eagles try to repeat as Hillsborough County Champs up at Wharton High.

2 - South Dade remained in second place as the Bucs seem to take the week off.

3 - Kissimmee Osceola moves up a place even though the Kowboys finished in second place at the Hutchins Memorial at Bishop Moore.

Coach Jim Bird had seven individual champs – Tim Locksmith (112), Matt Jones (125), Joe Locksmith (130), Pete Baldwin (140), Gabe Bird (145), Alex Eggers (152) and Levi Clemons (171).

4 – Manatee finished an impressive second place behind Brandon in the Ippolito and is right back into the Class 2A team chase. Jacob Gregory (125) and Ronnie Daniels (215) won titles while four were runner-up – Kyle Ballard (119), Michael Stewart (130), Daniel Dykes (145) and Isaac Riley (152). Plus, Alex Doran (135) took a bronze and Travis Fulk (112) placed fourth.

"We went thru some rough spots in the middle of our real tough schedule," says Coach Andy Gugliemini, "But we've got everybody at the right weight now. They are at their weights comfortably and it is showing in their wrestling. We may have a surprise or two left as far as what our lineup will be for the States."

"Jacob [Gregory] is our team leader and is, without a doubt, our team leader. When he was missing, our team's performance fell off a bit. Now that he is back, I can see how much better our team is looking as everybody feeds off of him."

"Daniel [Dykes] is quiet type who leads by example. Issac [Riley] is the vocal leader in the room. He is a very intelligent kid. He saw that we were lacking somebody to speak up when a few were slacking and he has taken that role and ran with it."

Gugliemini sees a close race with Palmetto Ridge for the Region 3 team title.

"They've got some solid kids down there,' Says Gugliemini. "I think the regions are going to be quite a battle. They are well coached and we look forward to that weekend."

Gugliemini wanted to add in some praise for some of his wrestlers who seem to be getting overlooked. "Kyle Ballard is one; those two impressive wins, back-to- back against [ Sarasota 's Robert] Herrera and [Springstead's Cody] Ross were key to our finishing second. Also, "Marshall Stewart making the finals. Where did this kid come from? He was JV last year." Also, Ronnie Daniels, "Since he has been down to 215, he hasn't lost. Earlier at the Kowboy Kup duals, we were right there with [Poinciana's Wilder] Rislin with one minute to go before we got stuck."

Gugliemini has to take care of some business this week in Manatee County as the Real Canes are seeking their 13th title in a row.

5 – Springstead slips a couple of notches as they finished in third place, 16 points behind second place Manatee, at the Ippolito. Coach Eric Swensen had just one champ - Richie Bliss (103) and two runner ups, Nick Soto (125) and Kenny Cox (215).

6 - Hialeah American drops a place as Manatee jumped back ahead of a half dozen teams.

7 - Oviedo won "The War off 434" which was their Senior Night against Winter Springs by 45-25.

The Lions also won the Seminole Athletic Conference Championships.

8 - Palmetto Ridge won the Titan Duals last week at Golden Gate beating North Port in the finals by 51-6. The Bears won all six of their dual meets to win their 4th team title this season. Previously, they have won the East Lake , the Longhorn and the Collier county championships.

Coach Mark Rosenbalm says, "I kind of like we're at; sort of flying under the radar. We took four weeks off without competing. I'll never do that again. Ever since the break, we came back with the Dodge Duals, where we faced some pretty good teams especially with South Dade being here. We are trying to get better week and peak at the state series."

He was asked how he saw the upcoming Region 3 tourney.

"Normally we see them every year at Brandon in the Streak tourney but since that is no more, we missed seeing them this year. Usually it is a pretty good rivalry. Gug always brings some solid teams, plus he gets support from his Manatee Mafia. It is going to be very competitive, with Charlotte and North Port , our region is pretty tough," said Rosenbalm.

"The team is working hard and we are going see put everything on the mat get better on the mat and see how good we can finish in the state tournament series."

9 - Cardinal Gibbons won the third and final contest of the best of three series for the best Broward County as the Chiefs defeated St Thomas on criteria in a hotly contested dual meet at Fort Pettineo.

Apparently the voters were impressed with Cardinal Gibbons enough to make them the new Top Team in Class 1A.

10 – Miami Columbus is now 10th.

11 – Riverdale gives up the number one team ranking in 1A despite winning the Marauder Duals in Clearwater.

12 - Bloomingdale was a solid fourth in the Ippolito. Coach Donny Peek reported that Chris Figari (160) was voted the tourney's Outstanding Wrestler among Heavy Weights, something that wasn't previously reported.

13 – Lake Gibson defeated Lakeland Jenkins in a dual in their only action last week. This week Coach Dan Walker's Braves have the Polk County Championships this weekend.

14 - St Thomas finished tied with Gibbons in their dual meet but lost on the tiebreaker criteria.
