SunStateFootball Take: Kevin Nelson

Gainesville MLB Kevin Nelson committed to Miami on Tuesday night. What is Miami getting with this pick-up?

Kevin Nelson Highlights

WHAT IT MEANS FOR MIAMI: Miami has a rich tradition of MLB's with names like Ray Lewis, Michael Barrow, Jon Vilma, and George Mira, but in the last 3-4 years they have really struggled getting production out of the spot. Two years ago they landed Arthur Brown, but he is not a 'true' MLB, he is playing there, but had to transition from the outside. Nelson is a pure MLB who has great range, physicality, and an infectious personality. He should immediately upgrade the position and due to a ton of high school experience(which shows up in his ability to 'read/diagnose' plays quickly), he might be a player who sees the field early in his career. Nelson is a classic MLB who just cleans up inside against the run, he gets off blockers extremely well, and has a non-stop motor. He is a sure tackler who drives through ball carriers and just flat has a great nose for the football. There is some concern about his size down the road because he is a stout 6'0, 210, but Miami is known for just that- smaller LB's who can run.

Two players from Gainesville who played for the Canes are RB Clinton Portis and WR Lamar Thomas. Nelson picked Miami over SEC offers from LSU, Arkansas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Florida.
