ABOUT THE PLAYER: Wilson plays for one of the elite programs in the nation, after losing 8 players to the University of Miami, Northwestern re-loaded and made the state title game last year. He is considered one of their top prospects this year and was recruited on a national level. Wilson has great athleticism which projects to upside down the road. While he sometimes 'leans' on smaller competition today, he has the tools to be a big time starting offensive linemen at the next level. The first question is whether he will move inside for Stanford. We would project that to be the case. At 6'3+ he lacks the prototype 6'5+ height that schools look for in a tackle. On the flip side, he can handle the spot because of his quick back pedal, bend, and ability to play in space. Those qualities make a transition to guard easy. Wilson also should be ready to play sooner than the average prospect because of his strength and level of competition he faces, this is a big bonus for the Cardinal. He has worked hard this off-season and we are excited to see him as a senior.
There are not many negatives here as a prospect. He is bright in the classroom, has a solid game IQ, has shown toughness, and is playing at the highest levels of high school football. As with all OL, it is somewhat up to them to take care of their bodies, add strength, and avoid injury. He does have a tendency to get lazy and just lean on smaller players, but we expect that to change when the man across from him is his equal.
THE WILSON RECRUITMENT: History tells us that Northwestern prospects go to Miami when given the opportunity. There are always exceptions, but the Canes were viewed as the leader. Several things happened however, Miami locked up three OL recruits early and have a 4th in prep school. Wilson also enjoyed his visit to Michigan. LSU, Florida, and Tennessee were also in the mix for his services. Stanford did an outstanding job staying on Torrian, they were always mentioned as one of his favorites, and the educational opportunities closed the deal.
Last year the Cardinal nabbed a player we had the chance to watch(and were impressed with) at the UA game, WR Jamal Patterson from Georgia. This year they land their SECOND OLmen from Florida (Joe McNamara). Clearly, HC Jim Harbaugh has taken this program 'national' and from our outsider's perspective, he seems to have it going on the recruiting trail. Getting a player from Northwestern will never hurt and you really have to take your hat off to the job the Stanford staff did here.
