September 25: SW Florida/Tampa

Here are the top games in SW Florida and Tampa for week four.

Desoto County at Charlotte

This is a non district game between two long time rivals who in general do not like each other. They played an epic back and forth battle last year that saw the Tarpons come out on top. The game features two of the best RB's in the state regardless of class in Desoto's Marcus Shaw and Charlotte's Mike Bellamy.

While both teams prefer to run the ball, Charlotte will put it in the air because of senior QB Kyle Midgett. The senior is 31-48 for 508 yards with 9 TD's and just one pick on the year and makes the most of his opportunities. Midgett can make all the throws, his favorite target is Alex Mut. Mut simplys gets open, catches the ball, and makes plays. The 6'3 junior is a gifted athlete that is just coming into his own physically after being a contributor since he stepped foot on campus. Nick Stephenson is another offensive weapon to keep an eye on. Bellamy, of course, is the weapon, simply put he might be the state's biggest game-breaker and seemingly gets better every game. Just a junior, he has been shredding defenses for over two years and is one of the fastest players in the state. Desoto can't stop him, but they have to try and limit his big gains. Defensively the Tarpons have taken it up a notch this year. Byron Grant and Antwan Allen give them two big bodies to rotate on the DL and CB Darion Shine (a Desoto transfer) headlines the secondary (where Mut will play as well).

Desoto will run the ball down your throat and then do it again. It starts with Shaw who runs with speed, power, and vision. After 2,300 yards as a junior, he has 709 through three games with 9 TD's. Antonio Anderson is a 6'2 junior with speed who is starting to establish himself. Three more players will get carries including QB Isiah Bryant. Desoto will need to win this game on defense, in particular their DL. DT Dalton Wertz, a terrific two way junior, Davis Marshall, and talented 6'4 junior James Greene need to win the battle in the trenches and hope the back 7 has a great tackling night. Wertz might not leave the field in this one as he is their best OL as well. Greene doubles as a TE.

Desoto is not a very deep team with a number of players who go both ways, they need the clock to be moving in this one or they will wear down in the 4th quarter. Bellamy is too good for a tired defense. Emotions will be running hot and that might help Desoto stay in this one.

Alonso at Hillsborough

Alonso is 2-1 while Hillsborough is 1-1. This is a non-district game between teams with expectations heading into the year.

Alonso is led by senior QB and Wyoming commit C.J. Bennett(30-52, 448 4/2). He is one of the most accurate passers in the state and put up huge numbers as a junior. Bennett is spreading the ball around to Jesse Anaya(6-106), Brandon Holloway(7-99), and Jameel Gay(6-94). They have not been successful running the ball. Hillsborough counters with a great defense, particularly in the secondary.

Hillsborough QB Tarean Austin(19-33, 320 3/3),'s #7 QB in Florida, heads a Terrier attack that has balance. RB Rodney Johnson(10-157) gets it down on the ground and WR's Charles Lovett(6-124) and Terrence Mitchell(4-81) are big play weapons on the outside. Alonso junior DE Anthony Chickillo(4 sacks) will try to wreak havoc and disrupt both.
