Monroe Area's Dilorenzo takes leadership position

MONROE -- As the Monroe Area High School baseball team continues to fight for a state tournament berth, Diamond Canes coach Rusty Hendricks expects his players to step up their performances a notch.

One player who is emerging as an offensive all-around team leader is Justin Dilorenzo, who excels offensively, defensively and on the pitcher's mound.

Dilorenzo is batting .382 as Monroe Area's leadoff hitter and has a .655 slugging percentage with three home runs, six doubles and 11 RBIs.

Hendricks said Dilorenzo's .600 on-base percentage is what a team needs from its lead off batter.

"Justin is a very talented player," Hendricks said. "He is not a blazer, but he is a smart player. He has stepped up his level of dedication this year and made great improvements in all aspects of his game."

The key to the junior's improvement is clear, according to his coach.

"He has become a very coachable player," Hendricks said. "He listens to what the coaches tell him and goes out and does what it takes to be successful. He has gotten more dedicated in the weight room. I believe there is great potential for him in the future."

Dilorenzo has also seen action on the pitcher's mound this spring, helping his team get into playoff contention.

"He is the type of player you could put anywhere on the field and he would help you be successful," Hendricks said of the junior who pitches, plays in the outfield and shortstop. "If he continues to work hard in the offseason he can really be something special his senior year."
