GA OL is top Student Athlete

Marist is loaded for a run at the 4A State Championship this season. Marist lost in the Georgia Dome to Thomas County Central 35-34 in one of the best games of the year. Marist returns 17 starters from last year's semi-final team, and anchoring the line of scrimmage will be big Matt Rumsey.

Rumsey checks in at 6-4 and 265 pounds, and the only thing that exceeds his brawn is his brains. Rumsey has a 330 pound bench press and a 475 pound squat. He did 21 reps of 185 at the Nike Camp in Auburn, but he said he can do better than that.

"I had been laying off of the weights getting ready for the state track meet," said Rumsey. "My best with 185 is 27 reps." And how did the track meet go? "I finished 3rd in the state in both the shot put and the discus."

Rumsey's physical attributes are impressive, but they only tell half the story. Rumsey currently carries a 3.6 GPA, and he scored a 1330 on the SAT. Predictably, academics will play a large part in his recruitment.

"I'm going to Maryland, and I might visit some of the Ivy League schools in July. I'm looking at Maryland, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Harvard, Princeton, and Pennsylvania right now. I'm looking for a good combination of academics and athletics."

Rumey's size, quickness, and class work will make him a tantalizing prospect for several schools across the country.
