CB D.J. Smith Profile
The offer went to Walton High School [Marietta] junior D.J. Smith, the No. 13 cornerback in the class of 2014, according to Scout.com.
"I was in the library doing work and my coach came in and said the Clemson coach is here to see you. I went outside my lunchroom and saw [Venables]…he let my coaches know that I have an offer and he wanted me to come up to the Junior Day on February the second," Smith told CUTigers on Wednesday.
The 6-foot, 175-pound prospect will indeed take that visit to Clemson.
Venables had been in contact with Smith prior to the offer. The two have interacted of Facebook several times.
"We would just exchange small talk, him just checking on me," Smith said.
He's still learning about what the Tigers' program.
"I know a little bit. I just know how the rock, how they touch that before every game -- their little pre-game ritual," Smith said.
He added, "Their style of play is fast. Their spread offense, they're fast-paced. That stands out -- and that solid orange."
Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan State, Nebraska, UNC, South Carolina and Vanderbilt have also offered.
Florida State, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia have hosted him for visits. In addition to Clemson, he hopes to also visit UNC and Louisville this spring.
"I don't have favorites. I do have some I like more, but I wouldn't consider them favorites. I like Georgia, Florida and Alabama. But I didn't get an offer from Alabama yet."
However, playing in the SEC isn't a must.
"I just want to play somewhere that I can get the earliest amount of playing time," Smith said. "It's not really what conference, just where I can play the earliest."
As a junior, Smith had 50 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups. On the offensive side of the ball he rushed for 450 yards and five touchdowns and had over 400 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
