2003 Preview: Douglass

Douglass High School went 5-4-1 last season with a young team. This year, the Astros are loaded with 17 starters returning. They will be a team to be reckoned with in 7-AAAAA.

With 17 returning starters from a team that had a winning record last year, there will be a lot of players to talk about that are key to the success of Douglass High School. Coach Gary Cantrell has a team loaded with returning talent, but junior running back James Davis may be the player most crucial to Douglass' success. He had 1,800 yards of total offense last year and was an All-State selection.

Corey Thompson stands at 6-0 and 165 pounds and can run a 4.4 forty. He is a burner at receiver that will keep defenses honest. It will be hard to load up against Davis, with Thompson lurking on the outside. The offensive line will be anchored by 6-2 and 300 pound Jarrod Wynn, 6-0/275 pound guard Ralph Manns, and 6-1 and 268 pound Zerrod Wilkes. Jason Hill is an excellent offensive tackle, and he will be a player to watch for the Class of '05.

As good as the offense is, the defense may be even better. All of the linebackers are back including standouts Leland Jones, TiQuintin Morrell, Cepeda Kilgore, and Daryl Thomas. Jones was the teams' leading tackler, and he will have a lot of help this year. Douglass only lost one defensive end and one corner from the entire defense last season.

Seniors Russell Phillips and Timothy Bullock will anchor the defensive line, and cornerbacks Carlos Bates and Rayshaun Calhoun return in the secondary with safety Orlando Jewell.

Douglass' big matchups include away games with Stephenson and Cedar Groves and a home battle with Southwest Dekalb.
