2003 Preview: Hawkinsville

Hawkinsville won the 4-A championship and made it all the way to the Semifinals in the state playoffs.

After opening wins over AAA Perry, AA Bleckley County and AAA Dodge County, the Devils played their only poor half of the season in the opening half at Fitzgerald. They came back in the last half to score and come within 28-20 of the top five ranked Purple Hurricane before turning the ball over and allowing a 50 yd TD run in the last 2 minutes for a 36-20 final. Despite the loss this game was a big key for the rest of the year because the players saw they could contend with a bigger, ranked school. They, in fact, insisted that they should have won. The Devils went on to win the region and go undefeated the rest of the way until losing to Clinch County in the Dome. A dramatic drive and score in the final minutes to defeat Gordon Lee in the quarterfinals will be remembered forever by the Red Devil faithful.

The Devils return 6 starters on both offense and defense. Senior TB/KR/LB Charles Johnson has already committed to UGA and will be a force on both sides of the ball. At 6'3" and 240 lbs, while running a 4.5 and benching 350 lbs, he's an awesome athlete. Jr. Brandon Perry was an All-State defensive lineman last year and weighs in at 265 while doubling as the TE on offense. Last year's leading tackler, Senior Antwan Thomas, returns at linebacker and will also play some at FB. OT/DL Trey Dunmon will be a force on both sides of the ball. He's a Jr. and weighs in at 265. CB/WR Kemuel Spivey is a Jr. and should be one of the better receivers in Class A this year. Senior Dedric Smith will be the other WR and also play safety. Both he and Spivey have sprinter speed. Junior Todd Coley returns at QB and has sprinter speed also. He passed for over 1,000 yards last year.

The Devils should again contend for the region title and a play off berth.
