Scouting linebacker Josh Johnson

When everything finally clicks correctly for a player on the field, the term "The light has come on" is used fairly often. For Stephenson linebacker Josh Johnson, the future has never been brighter.

I had the pleasure of attending the Stephenson vs. Tucker scrimmage last night at Dekalb Memorial Stadium, and I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed with Five of my Top 25 players in the state suiting up. There was a lot to be impressed with on the field, but I wanted to pay particular attention to linebacker Josh Johnson of Stephenson.

Johnson is physically ready to play big time college ball right now, but at times last season as a junior he looked more re-active than pro-active at his linebacker spot, and was not making the most of his physical ability. "Instincts" is the term we use for a player with the knack to be in the right place in the right time.

What a difference another year in the system can make. Johnson was a different player last night than he was last year. His on the field play is matching his physical performance, and that is a scary thought for anyone trying to move the ball against him. He is taking good angles to the ball carrier, and he is covering sideline to sideline.

In the first half, he made open field tackles on D.T. McDowell (twice) and Thomas Brown. Those guys are Top 15 players in the state in their own right, and Johnson was dragging them down in the open field. He has extremely strong hands. He reached for players with one hand and was able to drag them down.

When mentioned to Coach Ron Gartrell the strides that Johnson has made since last season, Gartrell who has been watching improve for months nodded in agreement. "This is his team now," said Gartrell.

At 6-2 and 230 pounds, Johnson can play inside or outside at linebacker, and his #11 ranking in the state of Georgia may turn out to be too low before it's all said and done.
