2004 Girls Golf Playoff Preview

AA

This has all the makings of a barnburner. Cherokee Golf Club in Cedartown has the pleasure of hosting what should be the closest tournament of all the classifications. Darlington will serve as the host school, giving them a home course advantage that might prove to be the difference.

Blessed Trinity is the defending champion and they have everyone returning this year. Senior Brooke Alexander will provide solid leadership and experience to aid junior Rachel Rogers and sophomore Ashley Barbee. The Lady Titans will definitely be in the hunt.

The other two teams that will make this championship interesting are Wesleyan and Greater Atlanta Christian. These two teams tied in a match in late-March, with G.A.C. winning on the third tiebreaker criteria. To date, it is Wesleyan's only loss of the season, meaning the Lady Wolves will be looking for some payback come May. Super sophomore Katie Tufts will lead G.A.C. into the tournament, looking to prove their undefeated regular season was no fluke.

Prediction:

Team - Wesleyan School
Individual - Brooke Alexander (Blessed Trinity)

The smallest classification moves south to Waycross for the state tournament. The Lakes at Laura S. Walker, one of the Georgia State parks golf courses, will be an excellent venue for the golfers of Class A.

Host school, Ware County Magnet, will look for a three-peat, having won in 2002 and 2003. Coach Tony Wheeler likes the home course advantage, but says this tournament is definitely "up for grabs." Despite their success in recent years, Ware County is still a young team. Kelli Risden and Renee Smith are both juniors that have a lot of solid tournament experience. Freshman twins Kacie and Melissa Gunner should do fine in their first state tournament action.

Other teams to watch out for are Aquinas and Brookstone. Aquinas is led by Traci Bodner, who will be hoping the putter gets hot for her and her teammates. Elizabeth Livengood will lead an underrated Brookstone team. Don't be surprised if one of these teams pulls off an upset.

Prediction:

Team - Ware County Magnet
Individual - Kelli Risden (Ware County Magnet)
