2004 Boys Golf Playoff Preview

This tournament heads north to Calhoun, where Gordon Central High School will host at Fields Ferry Golf Course. The big hitters should score well on the 6,700-yard layout, but anything can happen over 18 holes.

On paper, everything points toward Marist continuing their domination of the AAAA classification. As defending champs, and winners of four of the last five state championships, there is no way coach Ron Bell can avoid the 'favorite' moniker. Earning respect is nice, but the obligatory 'bull's-eye' that goes with it can create a lot of additional pressure.

The War Eagles have everyone back from their winning 2003 team. With three seniors and five juniors, Marist has eight excellent golfers competing for six spots - not a bad problem to have. Anchored by seniors Brett Lang, Graham Shurley, and Patrick Broadus, look for a runaway performance. Don't expect anything different in 2005 either. Juniors Matt Kiepura, Michael Votta, Rob Heroman, and Brian Jackson should complete a three-peat next year.

Potential challengers to the Marist juggernaut are Habersham Central and South Forsyth, both of whom shot 302 at a recent tournament.

Team - Marist
Individual - Brett Lang (Marist)
