2004 Boys Golf Playoff Preview

The 36-hole event will take place at the Oleander Golf Course on Jekyll Island, giving perennial powerhouse Glynn Academy a decided home course advantage. But before you give the Terrors from Brunswick the title, look to the north.

Region 6 boasts some of the finest talent, from top to bottom, in the state. Defending champion Northview returns their entire team from last year, including senior standout Knox Martin, last year's individual medallist. Coach Russell Harrell will have to rely on depth, experience and senior leadership if they hope to repeat.

But a funny thing happened to Northview on the way to the title last year - they almost didn't make it out of the region tournament. Finishing in a three-way tie for second, Northview clawed its way back via a playoff, thus continuing on its run. Such is the nature of a powerhouse region - state champions who were only one stroke better than finishing fifth in the region.

The other teams in Region 6 to watch out for are Roswell, Milton and Centennial. Roswell's strength is its depth. Seniors Robbie Morrice and Brendan Wales hope to put last year's disappointment in the region tournament behind them and finish their careers on top. Likewise for Milton's J.T. Hoffman. Don't count out the Centennial either. Bolstered by seniors Ben Spickard and Chris Smith, both of whom have already signed on to play Division I golf next year, the Knights hope to contend as well.

Don't be surprised if Region 8 plays a major role in deciding the championship either. Brookwood, Parkview, South Gwinnett, and Collins Hill are all loaded with talent. It will boil down to who has the hot putter that day.

Team - Centennial
Individual - Chris Smith (Centennial)
