Class A - Region 1

2004 Football Preview
Class A - Region 1

Down south in Region 1, the Clinch County Panthers should bring another region title to Homerville. After three consecutive trips to the Dome and a state title in 2002, new head coach Jim Dickerson has to replace some key players if he wants to play in Atlanta again. First and foremost he will have to find a capable replacement for QB Joe Louis Mingo, one of the most dangerous offensive players in all of Georgia the past two years. Either Lamar McNight or Jarrod Bighams should win the starter's role with the other starting at wide receiver. In addition, Jonovan Williams at center is the only returning starter on the offensive line. On the defensive front Williams also returns as the nose guard along with tackles Edric "Hamburger" Tolbert and Darrion Thomas. Seniors Matt Dupree and Jarvis Henderson return at linebacker along with Mantario Royal at corner back and Lamar McNight at safety. With this capable defensive crew it's no wonder that Coach Dickerson chose to retain his position as defensive coordinator when replacing legendary Cecil Barber, who's moved on to rebuild the Jeff Davis program.  The other contenders in the region should be led by Miller County. Coach Ronnie McNeese always fields a hardnosed team and, even though All-American Brandon Miller will be at UGA this fall, this bunch of Pirates will uphold that tradition. Both Atkinson County and Seminole County should be in the play off hunt along with Class A newcomer, Turner County. Coach Eric Soliday has returned to Ashburn after winning a couple of state AA titles in Americus. He brought along a good QB, his son, who'll compete for the job and there's a good group of returning starters at most other positions, even though they're young. Both the Pelham Hornets, with new coach Phillip Richards, and the Lanier Bulldogs will have a tough time competing for a playoff berth.
