Class A - Region 2

2004 Football Preview
Class A - Region 2

The front-runner in Region 2 this year is last year's surprise team, the Pacelli Vikings. With at least three players already committed to Division I programs (RB Matt Dunham / FSU, OT Michael Harness / Auburn, DE Kalvin "Pig" Baker / Florida), Coach Kevin Pettis and his talented team are poised to make a run at the title. After being upset by Dooly County in the quarterfinals last season, they've made a concerted effort to get stronger and faster in the off season and Pettis has openly remarked that he's set the Hawkinsville program as his benchmark. Defensively the Vikes return the entire line and secondary but have to replace two linebackers. The entire offensive line returns along with QB Jonathan Vogler (another Div I prospect at 6-4/ 185 lbs) and all-state running back Dunham (6-2/ 233 lbs), making Pacelli arguably the best offensive machine in the state. The other Vikings in the region, Taylor County, should once again have a playoff team and newcomer Randolph-Clay could also contend after losing in the first round of the Class AA playoffs last year. Brookstone and Schley County will be much improved along with Central Talbotton and Calhoun County always has talent. Stewart-Quitman will bring up the rear as always.
