Class A - Region 8

2004 Football Preview
Class A - Region 8

The Commerce Tigers lost to only Lincoln County (14-7) and Hawkinsville (25-6) last year, but they must do some serious reloading for this season. Coach Steve Savage must replace 1900-yard rusher Dennis Wilder and outstanding option QB Josh Haynes. The frontrunner to lead the potent, triple-option I-Bone is senior Caleb Jordan, who was injured last year but is 100% now. Big fullback David "Moose" Bray (5-10/ 220 lbs) returns to provide those punishing runs up the middle. As always the Tigers will have a strong offensive line led by Ben Wilson (6-1/ 245 lbs) and Hunter Roop (6-0/ 210). Defensively, the Tigers will be led by All-Star Nick Slayton and Bray at linebacker along with big defensive lineman Hunter Glenn (6-2/ 260 lbs). The season opener, when Trion visits Commerce, should tell a lot about how well the Tigers will do in the playoffs this year. Regardless of the outcome, they should win the Region 8 title again. Athens Academy, Jefferson and Social Circle should vie for the remaining three playoff spots. Athens Christian beat Towns County for their only region win in last year's season finale. This year's contest should again decide who resides in last place.
