2004 Football Preview
Class AAA - Region 4
Peach County lost the state title game to LaGrange 16-7 last year and it looks like those two could be on a collision course again. While the Trojans lost All-State quarterback A.J. Bryant to the Georgia Bulldogs, they do have seven Division 1-A prospects, headlined by running back Tony Wright (5-11,185) who rushed for 2155 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Assisting Wright in easing the loss of Bryant on offense are lineman Trevor Scott (6-2, 265) and tight end Deitrich Hudson (6-3, 210). On defense, talented linebackers Darius Dewberry (6-3, 220) and Fred Wright (5-10, 200) along with defensive end Larry Cox (6-5, 233) and cornerback Brandon Lowe (5-8, 172) will keep the Trojans tough to score on.
It may be a rebuilding year in Sandersville for Washington County, but the Golden Hawks return enough talent to challenge for a postseason berth. A total of 17 seniors are back. Washington County must replace the versatile Stacy Walls to contend. The good thing is they play host to Peach County on October 1st, a game that should decide the region crown.
Spalding had its best season in school history last year, making its first trip to the state semifinals before losing to Peach County. The Jaguars lost their best player – running back Mario Gilbert – to graduation. There are holes to fill, but a talented group of underclassmen are expected to help them return to the postseason.
Mary Persons is always tough and should challenge for the playoffs. The Bulldogs lost to Swainsboro last year in the second round.
Northeast (Macon) and Perry have plenty of athletes, but
will find making the postseason a bit tougher this season. Southwest
(Macon) finished a game below .500 last year and will struggle to compete.
