Class AAAAA - Region 4

Don't judge Region 4 by its size. Most regions in Class AAAAA are nearly twice as big as the seven-team league, but few can boast two state title contenders. Newnan returns the bulk of last season's state semifinalists and defending region champ Lovejoy has reloaded with yet another group of talented skill players.

Newnan may have the best quarterback in the state in Tyler Horne, who threw for 3,057 yards — sixth most in state history — and 24 touchdowns in 2003. Horne will be aided by the return of running back Marc King and four members of the offensive line. Seven defensive starters will be back, including the entire secondary.

Lovejoy boasts a handful of Division I recruits once again, including offensive lineman Chris Scott, running back Mark Pettaway and quarterback Darius Thomas, who will be asked to lead a young offense. The defense should be solid again with the return of seven starters, including intimidating defensive linemen Jonathan Battle and Jermain Jordan.

East Coweta may be ready to return to state power status with quarterback Alex Holloway, who threw for 1,001 yards and ran for 793 yards — both team highs — last season.

Starr's Mill doesn't boast the talent of the other region's teams, but with five starters returning on each side of the ball, coach Mike Earwood may be able to lead the Panthers back to the postseason.

Don't expect Fayette County or new region members Mundy's Mill or Union Grove to be factors.
