2005 Football Preview
Class AAAA - Region 3
Expect much of the same as last year in this region. Griffin and Upson-Lee will be the favorites in the North subregion, while a pair of Warner Robins schools in Warner Robins and Northside will be the teams to beat in the South subregion.
Warner Robins reeled off 14 straight after tying Houston County in its opener en route to the state title. The Demons lost a wealth of talent, including Class AAAA state Player of the Year Alton Sanders and defensive lineman Justin Brown. But there is enough talent for this team to continue dominating this region. The offensive line remains strong and a pair of wideouts are back - seniors Larry Richardson (6-2, 170) and Maurice Gray (5-10, 170). Defensively, senior Dominique Davenport (5-11, 190) may be as good of a defensive back as there is.
Northside will challenge Warner Robins for the region crown. The Eagles will once again be strong, especially on defense where linemen Deontea Jordan and Omar Smith return. Linebacker Larry Tennyson and defensive back Brian Holder also return.
Westside-Macon missed the postseason last year in what was an uncharacteristic season. The Seminoles should be back in the chase this fall.
Hardaway, Carver-Columbus and Central Macon will have a tough time contending in this subregion once again.
In the North subregion, Upson-Lee returns a solid nucleus that should have the Knights playing for the subregion crown. Upson-Lee has a pair of strong running backs in seniors Jesse Garmon (5-9, 245) and Terrell Terry (6-2, 195). There is enough talent to help the Knights go deep in the postseason.
Griffin lost a wealth of talent, including quarterback Randrick Coggins, running back Ahmad Mayo and linebacker Sherard Graddick. The Bears could struggle early but will mature as the season progresses.
Luella, in its second season of varsity competition, features Division I prospect Jeremy Ringfield (6-5, 190) at wide receiver. However, the Lions are still too young to compete for the postseason.
Henry County, Stockbridge and Eagle's Landing won't figure in the postseason race. Dutchtown is playing a non-region schedule as they continue to build their new program.
