Monday night Brentwood held their winter sports banquet honoring all the basketball teams, but the stars of the show were the GISA AAA girls basketball state champions, who won the school's first ever basketball championship with a 56-49 victory over Deerfield-Windsor school from Albany earlier this month.
Two ladies from this team garnered GISA All-State recognition, sophomore Amy Jones and senior Kena Veal, who became the Lady Eagle's all-time leading scorer this year as well. Coach Edwin Cook, whose team has gone 58-2 over the past 2 years, recognized Kena as being among the top career statistical leaders in many categories, both offensive and defensive.
Kena is the third of four Veal sisters to have starred at Brentwood over the past few years. And the 4th Veal, Faran, was a sophomore starter on this year's championship team as well. At the end of the evening, Athletic Director Chandler Dennard asked Kena's parents, Rhonda and Phil Veal to come forward with Kena, when it was announced that Kena's #12 would be retired.
Other seniors recognized from this year's team were starters Megan Cole and Fran Lord, and key reserves Julie Webb and Chelsea Avant.
