Preview: West Laurens Raiders

New Coach John Pate comes from Georgia Southern. Pate faces a real challenge adjusting to the High School level from the College ranks. Pate is trying to build the players' work ethic up to the level it takes to compete with the top teams. Although the team is currently a work in progress, the players are starting to adjust to the demands.

On Offense the Raiders have nine Junior starters. They will be running the old Georgia Southern option, but will throw the ball some to take advantage of Jake Hendley's arm. Hendley started six games at Quarterback last year before he was injured.

Dominique Johnson (5'11", 170lbs) will be the A back. James Rozier (5'10", 185lbs) will be one B back, with Jamel Jones (5'9", 160lbs) taking the other slot. Jones had a good spring.

The Wide Receivers for the Raiders will be Antonio Surry and Corey Hassen. A key in this offense will be the blocking ability of the Wide Receivers.

Roscoe Rowe (6'0", 265lbs) a Junior, will take the Center slot with Brandon Cliett (6'1", 218lbs) anchoring the line at tackle.

On Defense the Raiders will be running a 4-3. They have made some changes to get more size in the middle and faster on the outside. Marcus O'Neal, Steven Johnson, Jarrett Northcutt and Demario White will man the Defensive Line. Brandon Cliett will also play on the DL.

The Linebackers will be keyed by Dondricus Anderson and Tyler Daniels. Both players have good size and run well.

The Secondary features Michael Slaughter and Majeour Higdon at CB. The Safeties will be manned by Walter Blash and Adam McCullers. Several members of the West Laurens State champion wrestling team will start on defense and Coach Pate hopes the toughness and winning experience will help here.

Good luck to the Raiders in their upcoming season and thank-you to Coach Pate for previewing the team with us.
