The Region 2-AAAAA playoff race may turn out to be one of the most interesting in Class AAAAA with no clear-cut No. 1 team at this stage.

Stephenson has been the team to beat in recent years, but no team lost more to graduation than the Jaguars, who had more talent on defense than many colleges last season. The core of that group, including star linebacker Marcus Ball, is gone after leading the team to a 12-2 record and a state semifinal appearance. Still head coach Ron Gartrell's team still manages to field a talented team year after year with guys like cornerback Aaron Thomas, a top college prospect.

The wild card in 2-AAAAA is M.L. King, which enjoyed success in AAA the past two seasons, including a 9-3 mark in 2005. Returning are seven of the team's top-10 tacklers, including linebacker Joel Kyte (team-high 94 tackles, 7.5 sacks) and defensive lineman Dexter Merritt (61 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 17 tackles for losses). Linebacker/defensive end Adimabua Obata (92 tackles, 8 sacks) also returns, while the offense will be led by Cordero Jones (735 yards on just 79 carries).

Running back Harvey English and a huge offensive lineman make Douglass, 7-4 last season, an imposing team. Union Grove went 9-3 last season and has its sights on a region title with a team led by Georgia Tech commitment Kyle Jackson, a tough linebacker.

Redan and running back Tony McCord look to top last year's 4-6 record, a mark shared by Newton. The Rams feature some good athletes like tight end J.J. Brown and defensive tackle Joe Behrman.

Lithonia was winless last season while Luella also has its sights on a better year than 2005s 2-8 record, which came in Class AAAA.
