RICHMOND, VA - In it's second year of existence, the NRA's 3 Position Air Rifle Championship was held in the Richmond VA Arthur Ash Athletic Center this year. While most High School Athletes were enjoying their summers, five High School Riflery standouts worked to prepare and were rewarded with Bronze Medals for their efforts.
Roy McClain of Griffin Coached the Team this year. "This Match is a little like an All Star Game," Coach McClain said. The team practiced separately and some of them only met at equipment check on practice day. "I laid out a practice strategy, and held them accountable to be ready, and they were."
The Georgia team was composed of Team Captain, Carra Landrum - Roswell, Team Members Donavan Eason - Rochelle, Jeremy Drennan - McDonough, Roderick Foster - Griffin and Alternate Team Member Raichelle Smith of Brunswick.
A large number of records were established at this years National Championship, including largest number of teams competing, (some 30 states were represented), and more that 4 times the number of competitors as in 2001. The 2002 Georgia Team, sponsored by the Georgia Sports Shooting Association, destroyed the previous National record (established by the 2001 Georgia Gold Medal Team) by some 30 points with 4592 out of the 4800 possible. Host, Virginia State Shooting Sports Association won Gold with a two day total score of 4624. Silver Medallists Ohio Rifle & Pistol Team posted 4602, including Angela Engles' personal one day total of 592 out of 600.
This Match represented a solid performance by dedicated athletes and since most of them are sophomores or juniors, should make for a great team next year. The 2003 NRA National Championship will be held August 1-3 in Wilmington NC.
