Washington County got the ball first, and they took it right down the field on Peach County's defense. They finished the drive with a touchdown pass to Darrius Lee. The PAT failed, and Washington County held a 6-0 lead.
It didn't take long for them to add to that lead as Cordell Gladdin of
Washington County took a Bryan Ellis pass into the flats the other way for a
pick six. The Golden Hawks converted the two point conversion for a 14-0 lead
before Peach County had even run two offensive plays.
Peach County isn't one to buckle under an early lead though, and the Trojans
turned to their running game in their second possession to drive the ball down
the field. Junior running back Mareo Howard punched it in from close range to
bring Peach County within seven.
The Trojans looked like they were ready to tie the game, but as the first
quarter was running out, Peach County failed to convert on a first and goal at
the five yardline after a second down fumble turned the ball back over to
The first quarter came to a close with Washington County leading Peach County
14-7 after two costly turnovers cost the Trojans as many as 14 points.
Peach County turned the ball over deep in Washington County territory, but the
Golden Hawks were unable to flip the field position. They were forced to punt,
and Peach County got the ball back in good field position.
A good mix of running and passing got the Trojans in scoring position, and
senior running back Duranzo Brown went off tackle for a touchdown to knot the
score at 14-14.
Washington County had just given up a 14 point lead, but anyone that plays at
the "House of Pain" isn't going to give up quite that easily. The
Golden Hawks used big plays from Lee and a tail back duo of Deon Harden and
Rosco Walls to drive down the field and get another score. Harden and Walls
exploited the left side of the Trojan defense, with the latter getting the
Washington County missed its second PAT of the game for a 20-14 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff, Peach County had another big mistake as they fumbled the
ball right back to the Golden Hawks. Washington County took over on the Peach
County 30 yardline with just over five minutes left in the half.
Senior Kicker Dykel Johnson was true this time as he punched in a 40 yard field
goal to give Washington County a 23-14 lead.
Bryan Ellis immediately went to work for the Trojans as Peach County took to the
air to move the ball down the field on the Golden Hawks. Ellis connected with
Vanderbilt commitment Udom Umoh three times on the drive including the touchdown
that brought Peach County to within two points as Washington County led 23-21.
Washington County still wasn't done though. The running game went right again,
and Johnson was able to knock through a 43 yard field goal to take us to half
time at 26-21
