First Half Highlights
Opening the second half, St. Pius' ground game really started to click. Five
yards here, three yards there for first downs before sophomore running back
Jonathan Tinsley got loose for a long run. Senior guard Bobby Bray had an
outstanding block to spring Tinsley. The PAT made it 13-10 Northside with six
minutes left in the third quarter.
Momentum was definitely with St. Pius as they held Northside and forced a punt.
The Golden Lions were once again driving methodically down the field, but
momentum is only one play away as Northside forced a fumble. The visitor side of
the stadium erupted, and big MO was with Northside headed into the fourth
quarter with the Eagles still on top 13-10.
Northside Quarterback Marques Ivory threw a beautiful pass over the middle that
got the Eagles first and goal. After two straight stops by Tinsley, Green went
off tackle and slipped a couple of would be defenders for his third touchdown of
the game. The PAT was good, and Northside went up 20-10 with 8:30 left in the
A halfback pass by Tinsley was picked off and returned to the St. Pius 39 yard
line. Northside was able to get first and goal, but the Lions held and forced a
field goal attempt. The kick was missed, and St. Pius took over with four
minutes left on the clock trailing 20-10.
St. Pius was not yet ready to go home. The Lions drove down the field with big
plays and a little help from a personal foul on Northside, and quarterback Dylan
Knight found Joey Flint in the endzone for a pretty pitch and catch. The PAT was
good, but there was only 1:16 left on the clock.
The onside kick was recovered by Deonta Jordan for Northside, and they were able
to run out the clock for a 20-17 victory and a date in the State Finals.
