First Half Highlights
Jeff Turner continued his good work to open the second half as he fell on a
muffed punt by Clinch County fiving the ball to Athens Academy on the Red Devil
18 yardline with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
A first down run by Turner got the ball to the five, and two plays later Nick Stiles punched the ball across the endzone for Athens Academy. After a blocked
PAT, the Trojans claimed their first lead of the day at 13-10 with 8:21 left in
Clinch made another mistake in the kicking game as they muffed a punt at
midfield, and Athens Academy took over at the Clinch County 45 with 2:30 left in
the third quarter. The quarter ended with Athens Academy facing fourth and 9 at
the Clinch County 36 yardline.
The Spartans elected to punt and pinned the Panthers on their own nine
Some hard running by senior Justin Gainey got the Panthers out from the shadow
of their own goal posts. Then lightning struck. Quarterback Shane Burns hit
Lafiyama Lacey for a 66 yard scoring strike. The PAT was missed, but Clinch had
regained the lead at 16-13 with 9:46 left in the third quarter.
An Athens Academy punt and Clinch County was trying to run the clock down.
Athens Academy held on a 3rd and long on a well designed screen play and forced
Clinch to punt from its own 40. It had been an adventure all day, but Clinch got
off a terrific punt and Athens took over on its own 25 with 5:14 left in the
Forced into passing situations, Clinch County pinned its ears back and dropped
Athens Academy quarterback Scott Dalton twice for sacks. Clinch took over at the
Athens Academy 35 after a short punt.
Clinch County was able to run on Athens Academy and take a knee inside the 10
yardline to close out a 16-13 win over a scrappy Spartan Team.
