|High School||North Cobb Warriors|
|Head Coach||Shane Queen|
|Team Colors||Orange & Blue|
Last year, North Cobb lost their first three games of the season after
turning the ball over fifteen times. In fact, The Warriors had six turnovers in
their season opener against Kell only to lose by just seven points
"It was just a poor performance," said North Cobb head coach Shane Queen. "We couldn't get the kids to buy into what we were doing. But then, we kind of turned things around starting with the McEachern game."
After a (14-9) win over McEachern, The Warriors went on to win five straight games. They finished with a 6-5 record after a (22-21) loss to Grayson in what was their first home playoff game in nine years. North Cobb will have plenty of talent and experience returning for the 2007 season. The expectations are high as the Warriors look to, once again, challenge for another spot in the state playoffs.
"Our expectations are high," said coach Queen. "The junior and senior class is very talented. If we can keep working hard, I think this will be a real successful year for us. We've averaged 90+ in the weight room over the summer and the kids have really bought into what our coaches are telling them. I'm excited, the kids are excited, the community is excited and we've got a chance to have a really good football team."
Offensively, quarterback Matt Roark (Right) returns for his senior season. Roark, considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the Peach State, will have plenty of weapons to rely on in the passing attack. The Warriors will feature a trio of talented wide receivers -- Donte Sawyer, Rico Mack and Michael Emerson.
Calvin Middleton (Below) is the perfect running back for the spread offense. He has a great feel for the passing game as well. Middleton is one of the most underrated players in Georgia. Matt Britain, who holds several D-I offers, returns to lead the offensive line.
"Like you said, We have a lot of talent on offense," said Matt Roark. "Calvin Middleton is a very good running back. Everybody talks about his lack of speed, but they don't know how fast he really is in a game. He's very powerful too."
"At receiver, we got two of the best slot receivers in the County in Rico Mack and Michael Emerson. Then on the outside, we got Donte Sawyer. He brings the size and athletic ability that makes him hard to cover."
North Cobb needs to get better on defense, and that starts up front. The Warriors need more consistency from defensive tackles Jarvis West and Alonzo Jones at stopping the run. Talented Derek Lott and much improved Nhambi Evenwa will be manning the ends.
Star middle linebacker Bryan Presume is the team's leading returning tackler. Things should be better on the defensive side, where the Warriors look to reduce the number of points per game allowed (24.0) last season.
Region Outlook: North Cobb plays in Region 5-AAAAA, which was very competitive last year. Six of the Region's ten teams posted winning records in 2006. Coach Queen is looking for Region 5-AAAAA to be just as tough in 2007.
"Harrison has got the wide receivers that can play with pretty much anybody in the country. They're going to be loaded," said coach Queen. "Kennesaw Mountain has got the Bryce Ros kid. They've got three D-I kids. Etowah will be tough again. Then you still got McEachern and Marietta who's in the mix every year. There's five or six teams that are going to be very good, playing for only four playoff spots. South Cobb has been to the playoffs five out of the last seven years, so I would count them out either."
