Freshman Preview: Cass' Richard Samuel

As the 2008 college football season draws closer, will take a look at 2007-08 Georgia high school prospects as they make the transition to their respective colleges. Next on our list: former Cass High standout and future Georgia Bulldog Richard Samuel.

It's not easy to garner a five-star ranking as a high school football player, but that's just what former Cass High star Richard Samuel did to conclude his prep career.

The 6-2, 205-pound athlete was one of only three Georgia high school players to earn five-star status and the Cartersville native made a lot of college coaches unhappy when he ended his recruitment early and committed to Georgia in January of 2007. As a senior, Samuel excelled at both running back and linebacker. He finished his final prep campaign with 116 tackles in two seasons.

Recruitment: Like future teammate and fellow five-star recruit DeAngelo Tyson, Samuel followed his heart and gave UGA a strong verbal commitment early in the process. Despite offers from SEC and ACC powers such as Tennessee and Clemson, Samuel never wavered in his commitment and signed with the Bulldogs 13 months after committing.

At Georgia: Samuel heads to Athens without a position - but Georgia coaches will surely find one for him early. Will he be a tailback or linebacker? The speedster could excel at both at the next level but more likely than not he will wind up on defense.
