Gators to face Thomson after Patriot-chomping

Playing in Class AAAA after getting roughed up the previous years in Region 1-AAAAA has turned the tide for the Ware County Gators. Gators proved this Friday night against the Sandy Creek Fighting Patriots of Tryone.

Though Ware County failed to stop Jenna Thompson, the Patriot's kicker, from scoring at 21-yard three-pointer in the first quarter, the swamp boys held the lead for the rest of the game, with the final score 42-17.

Friday night's win advances the Gators to the second round of the playoffs where Ware will face Thomson, the number two AAAA team on the Georgia Varsity Sports Vent's Power Ratings.

Thomson could be the most challenging opponent the Gators have faced this year, even though the regular season schedule included Valdosta and Thomas County Central, schools known for playing power football.

If the Gators beat Thomson, they will have to find a way to do it without star running back Tommy Jones. Jones was injured Friday in the Patriot game with less than 6 minutes left, probably the same ankle he injured earlier in the season. He made good use of his fleet feet Friday night before his injury by running over 100 yards in the first two quarters.
