D&D Connection Leads Hillgrove Hawks

The Hillgrove Hawks may be the new kid on the block, but with talents like junior quarterback Synjyn Days and freshman running back Kenyan Drake, they won't be going away any time soon.

The Hillgrove Hawks might be new to the scene in the state of Georgia, but after advancing to the second round of the state playoffs in Georgia with a very young team, it's easy to see that they could be a new force to be reckoned with in 4A.

Leading the charge against Loganville were junior quarterback Synjyn Days and freshman, yes freshman, running back Kenyan Drake. Hillgrove runs a triple option directed by Days with powerful sophomore fullback Jabari Hunt and speedy senior Randall Cooper, but it's the Days to Drake combination that made Hillgrove so effective against Loganville.

Synjyn Days has good size, listed at 6-1/185. He runs with a nice blend of power and speed, and he directs the option offense efficiently. Georgia Tech uses a similar offense as Hillgrove and is apparently already interested in Days. I'm not sure Days throws the ball well enough to keep defenses honest on the college level, but he's an excellent athlete that also lines up on defense for the Hawks.

Days showed off his athleticism against Loganville, including an 81 yard touchdown run that put the Hawks ahead after trailing much of the game.

Kenyan Drake would be a college prospect if he were part of this year's Class of 2009. The fact that he's a member of the Class of 2012 means he'll be on the radar of every college coach in the country by the beginning of his sophomore season.

Drake has tremendous size for a freshman at roughly 6-0 and 200 pounds. He runs with great power and strength. His balance and use of his stiff arm is incredibly advanced. I've seen speedy freshman make an impact, but it's rare to see a freshman with the blend of size, power and speed that Drake brings to the table.

Hillgrove was eliminated from the playoffs in round two by perennial power Tucker, but with Drake and Davis leading the way next year, expect to hear more from Hillgrove in 2009 and beyond. They're not going away any time soon.
